The Esoteric Meaning of Numbers - Numerology 101

Who knows One? I know One. One is Hashem in the heaven and the earth.

A seemingly innocuous statement at first glance. However, if you look further you realize the depths of it. One is Hashem and nothing BUT Hashem is one.
One symbolizes uniqueness and unity. There is nothing on this earth that is unique or is perfectly united other than Hashem. When you hear an advertisement claiming that something is a one of a kind or a one day only sale, do you believe them? Of course not, because it's not possible in this world of ours.
The letter corresponding to the number one is the letter "aleph" whose gematria is one. What sound does the aleph have? None. It's silent because it's not pronounced and can't exist in this world. It's the same concept.
What does aleph mean? It can mean aluf, meaning champion, which makes sense being that it's the first letter of the aleph bet, or to teach. "l'aleph" means to teach or train. The gemara says "aleph bina", the first two letters, the "aleph" and "bet" are the beginnings of teaching.
We are taught that the first time in the torah that a word starts with a specific letter, that word defines the letter. The first word in the Torah that starts with the letter aleph is elokim.
If you look at the aleph, it's made up of a "vav" with a "yud" above it and a "yud" below it. The letter "yud" is one of the representations of Hashems name. This signifies Hashem in the heaven and the earth, with the "vav" (which is also part of Hashem's name) connecting the two. The gematria of two yuds and a vav = 2*10+6=26 which is the gematria of Hashems name.

Coincidences??? Clearly not......

The fact that the gematria of the letters making up an aleph comes out to be Hashems name is amazing. So much can be understood from one representation of a letter in the hebrew alphabet (I mean alephbet!), imagine in the tiniest complex creation of the world!

Hashem Echaaaaaaaaad - isn't there a reason we are supposed to elongate that word?

can't wait to read about Bet!

i like this line the best 'nothing BUT Hashem is one.' you often hear that Hashem is one.. but ive never heard 'nothing BUT Hashem is ONE'. only in Hashem is there comlpete unity, complete lack of discord.. that amazing.
great topic

Loved it!!!
And just to add a tiny tidbit:
Because aleph has an element of Olam Haemes in it (the top yud), it can have no sound as sound is only for that which can be defined in finite terms (as the transcendental world can never be)

Therefore the Bais, Gimmel and Daled together sound out 'beged' which means garment because they clothe the aleph and give it sound through the other letters.

swfm - you're welcome

frumgirl - it really is amazing. You're right. The bet is when the fun really starts

david - :-)

m00kie - great point. Another thought is that you can't have uniqueness and unity without infinity and only Hashem is infinite.

Kasamba - I touched upon the silent sound of the aleph, but you took it to a whole new level. thanks.

If Aleph symbolizes Hashem, then, like the number "1", Hashem adds something into everything that comes in contact with HKBH.

neil - nice insight

prag - very true. that's the whole point

I was also thinking about something else on my way in to work this morning. In the introduction I mentioned correlations between different things that have tens. One of them being the aseres hadibros.
The first of the aseres hadibros is "Anochi Hashem Elokecha". I am Hashem you're one and ONLY G-d.....
ties in very nice with the 1 and the Aleph.

intersting. this reminds when i was in seminary in israel for the year one of my subjects just focused on berishis, by the end of the year we barely made it through the first perek and this is excalty what we talked about. Just the letter aleph you can talk about for hours. I do want to mention one thing I disagree that you write that hashem is the only one that is unique. god created each of us with a unique body. AL of us have a body that you can identify that noone else has.
